Forge work

11th - 12th century
Iron beaten and welded by forging
43.5 x 33 x 20 cm
From the 'comarca' of El Pallars
MEV 3779

A bell with a conical body, oval in section, made of sheets of iron beaten and welded, and topped by a semicircular handle and a hook. Four vertical ribs mark the points where the sheets were welded together and, at the same time, reinforce its structure. Although it has traditionally been defined as a bell, both the morphology and the manufacturing process rather suggest it is a cowbell. The Museum conserves another similar bell, of a marked quadrangular shape (MEV 8646).
