Altar candlestick

Catalonia
14th - 15th century
Wrought iron, swaged, stretched and cut out
31 x 15 cm
Provenance unknown
MEV 3355

Altar candlestick comprising three arched legs made of iron bands, above which rises an eight-sided shaft, crowned by a disc-shaped knot, above which a fleur-de-lis opens, with curved petals combined with stamens – of which only one has been conserved. It is a type copied from the lily-shaped fleurons that crown the tops of Gothic grilles, also present on the large standing candelabra that used to flank the altar table. The pair of floral candlesticks conserved in the Museu Episcopal de Vic constitutes, together with the one in the Museu Diocesà i Comarcal de Solsona (MDCS 685), one of the few examples of this type made to illuminate and beautify the altar.
